The original version of XP was released in October 2001. When abandoned, in April 2014, it will have almost 13 years of life. Windows 98 had eight years of support. In another comparison, Windows 95 was released 14 years after the first version of MS-DOS, 1981 – one year more than the life of Windows XP.

Windows XP SP2 is already unsupported since last summer. Only Windows XP SP3 still receive updates.

Windows XP will be the first control system with external activation to be discontinued by Microsoft. The service is an anti-piracy measure. There are still doubts about the maintenance of activation services after the end of support.
