The popular social network Pinterest, the one that allows people to “pin” pictures in collections of interest, has been valued between $1bn and $1.5bn, after they raised a further $100m in funding.

Partypoker on the web.

The company has had a surge of interest in the last few months, and is as of now, the 16th most visited site in the US. This is according to the company Alexa. As of April 2012 the site has 20 million users, which is 10 million up from July 2011,and proving users are doing more than just accessing Facebook and playing on de.partypoker.com

The site was named one of the 50 best websites in 2011 by Time magazine, so it was bound to gain a following. And the company now has backing from a Japanese online retailing giant called Rakuten to add to the backing received by its existing investors. They include Andreessen Horowitz, FirstMark Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Not bad for a company that is only two years old as of March 2012. More and more brands are looking to advertise on Pinterest for free, in the hopes it will help increase sales. If free advertising is successful, Pinterest could charge them eventually for visibility on the site.

There are a few issues that have been raised. Legal experts suggest that the site could be liable for copyright infringement, because the site allows the user to copy images to the site. Many of which are copyrighted content. They could have some angry photographers on their hands.

Chief executive of Rakuten Hiroshi Mikitani states that they have invested because they “see tremendous synergies between Pinterest’s vision and Rakuten’s model for e-commerce.”

He also stated that from now on the Rakuten owned sites would be using the Pinterest “Pin it” badge to add content from now on. “Pinterest is the future.”

Many stories about the privacy that Facebook offers its users in the international press has been doing lately. In a recent study by the U.S. magazine Consumer Reports, found that half of proximadamente users accept strangers as friends on Facebook.

The survey was conducted only with U.S. consumers, but it is believed that this type of behavior will be repeated in other countries. By the numbers collected by the magazine, 13 million Americans who are on Facebook do not make efforts to protect their privacy. One fourth of this number allows anyone to have free access to information from their profile, wall and photos. Moreover, one every 15 U.S. residents with Facebook accounts have never even opened the settings page.

Jeff Fox, technology editor of the magazine responsible for the report, asks people to have a little more careful in this regard. After all, privacy is not only essential but also helps in their security.

“Facebook is a successful service, but is changing the way people communicate. Our investigation showed some very interesting, but others that are alarming. Consumers need to take care of there personal data, “he said.

The report also found that many users do not pay attention to what they write on the page. According to the study, nearly 5 million people publish location data every day on Facebook. According to experts, this is not very good. Even more the case when the user has friends in social networks that are not in contacts in real life. After all, people with bad intentions can lead directly to you.

And you, take care with your privacy on Facebook ? Do you accept unknown person as friends ?

The Android mobile platform from Google, generated a net loss for the company in all quarters of 2010, despite having generated 97.7 million dollars in revenue in the first quarter of that year, said American judge in a courtroom.

The discussions on Thursday’s finance has become the world leader on mobile software operating in just four years occurred during the hearing between Oracle and Google on the technology of smartphones.

A jury is deliberating on Oracle’s claim that Google, the main tool for Internet search violated his copyright on the programming language Java.

At a hearing without the presence of the jury on Thursday, U.S. District Judge William Alsup of the United States questioned lawyers for both companies on about some financial information presented in the case.

The judge did not disclose the specific numbers of injury Android, but said it lost money in each quarter of 2010.

”This adds a great loss for the year,” said Alsup.

Oracle claims that Google should not be able to deduct certain expenses of Android for the purpose of compensation in case of copyright. However, a Google spokesman, Jim Prosser said that Oracle misrepresented its financial numbers.

Company says its system translates the same daily amount of text found in a million books.

The decade long efforts of Google to automate the business of translation seems to have been worthwhile. The search giant announced yesterday that its service Google Translate has more than 200 million active users per month and that using the mobile version is quadrupling every year that passes. As you might already imagine, the system has global appeal, and 92% of its traffic comes from outside the U.S..

“In one day we translate almost the same amount of text you find in one million books. To explain it another way: what every professional human translate into a year, our system translates into about a day. For this estimate, it is concluded that most of the translations on the planet are now made by Google Translator, “wrote the research scientist Franz Och in an official blog post on the company .

The technology “Machine Translation (MT)” came from a long road since 2001, when Google introduced its first MT service that translates eight languages other than English and for it. The initial system was “not very good, and not evolved much in those early years,” says Och, who says that years of improvement in the mechanism of translation resulted in Google Translate on which millions of Internet users rely today.

The service now translates into about 64 languages, including more unusual (at least online) as Bengali, Basque, Swahili Yiddish and Esperanto. The service is not perfect, of course, and often miss many of the nuances that would be easily detected by a human translator. Still, there’s no denying its popularity and usefulness in a world incredibly connected.

Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, announced on Wednesday (2) a series of changes in design that felt more like Google , its major competitor.

“In recent months, we’ve done dozens of experiments to determine how you read our page and we can give the link you are looking for,” said Sally Salas, the team that runs the service.

According to Salas, the changes already begin to be seen on Wednesday. “We make the page easier to look, remove unnecessary distractions and let the overall experience more predictable and useful,” added the manager of Microsoft , which says the company used users reviews for the new design.

Besides the visual changes, Bing also loads pages more quickly and will most relevant results, Microsoft said. ”We’re not done. Even today we are testing some new ideas for the site’s homepage, “added Salas.

A famous person once said that size does matter which is true in the world of electronic gadgets as well, but in the opposite sense. Here things go from small to miniature and desktops turn into laptops. Netbooks are one of the latest entries on the scene and the question of netbook vs laptop is constantly being asked by most people.

Netbook vs Laptop: Which is Better out of These?

There is no definite answer to this question because it all depends on the suitability of the device vis-a-vis the requirements of the person. For some people, price is the most important factor while for others it is the usability of a netbook which would make them buy it over a laptop. It is not possible to cover each and every point in detail in this short article, but I will try to analyze which product you should buy given your requirements and likings.

The first factor is price and no doubt netbooks are lot more cheaper than laptops. So if saving money is your sole criteria for selection, just buy a netbook without any second thoughts.

Yet for many people price may be important but not the sole factor in making such a decision. Performance and usability are the main considerations since there is no point buying a low cost product which does not perform the tasks you require.

The size of the screen also matters as most netbooks would normally have a 10 inch screen. The main drawback of this screen is that people who have to spend a lot of time in front of their computers, find it quite straining to their eyes. Laptops on the other hand, can come with screen sizes anywhere from 12 inches to 17 inches, which is nearly the size of the desktop monitor. The same can be said about the keyboard size. Many people find it hard to get used to a small keyboard of a netbook and either have to buy an external one, or cope with fingers and wrists strain caused by typing on a netbook’s small keyboard.

Many netbooks do not have the facility of an optical drive which means that in order to run your favorite movie or any other program which is available in the disc format. Yet this problem can be overcome by connecting an external optical drive to the system as and when required. This ensures that you get to use the optical drive while maintaining the size advantage. If you have a home or office network, another option would be to share the existing optical drive from your other computer so you could access it from a netbook that wat.

Hence it can be seen that though there is no clear winner in the netbook vs laptop tussle, if you know what all you want from your machine, the choice is not that hard to make.
